Different – Slum School Solutions

Large Scale

More than 3 million children in Kenya cannot attend either a government or quality private school. The solution most non-profits propose is to build new schools for them. To reach all these children, you’d have to build about 6,000 schools. Slum School Solutions takes a different approach.

Thousands of non-formal schools already exist in the slums. Our solution is to align with these schools – help them reach government standards, procure permanent funding, and increase enrollment so these millions of kids can get the quality education they deserve. This can be done at a far quicker rate and for far cheaper cost than building new schools.

Locally Based

Every school is unique, and the people in a neighborhood understand the needs and available resources far better than anyone outside it. One size standard solutions cannot address the differences between neighborhoods, schools, and regions.

Slum School Solutions’ approach is to partner with local schools, local community based organizations and NGOs, and local authorities to learn about each particular school’s needs and partner in finding solutions for them. We are actively engaged with local providers of services such as teacher training and even food programs to get them what they need to improve. Currently all our staff live in the slum they work in, and the Executive Director lives close to Kenya’s largest slum, Kibera.

We believe this large scale yet locally based approach produces the best results at the lowest costs.
